Since 2014, we’ve been rescuing, rehabbing and rehoming animals in need.

Horses are the best teachers.

First, an unforgettable lesson.

Way back in the 1980s, Karen volunteered at a therapeutic riding center and worked with a boy who was quadriplegic. In his wheelchair, he was limited, but on a horse he was the embodiment of freedom. A seed was planted in Karen’s brain.

Two horses became twenty.

Horse math is funny. Karen and Rafe adopted their first two horses from Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue and started training with Angi Murray and Seth Murray. The longer they spent around horses, the more horses joined their family.

Wrong Turn Ranch, established 2014.

The Perys and Murrays joined forces and founded Wrong Turn Ranch as a home for their growing herd. Karen and Angi welcomed friends and colleagues to discover themselves through the eyes of a horse. People shared that being around the horses helped them feel alive again.

A spark was reignited.

In the early 2010s, Rafe and Karen were exhausted growing a business and family. Karen invited Rafe to an equine leadership immersion where a horse named Gringo reminded him there were still fun and adventures to be had.

The horses came home to Los Angeles.

Topanga Canyon to Santa Ynez to Leona Valley to Somis. After a decade of setting up stalls and repairing fences on on a variety of properties, Wrong Turn Ranch moved to its forever home in Somis, a coastal-agricultural area just outside of Los Angeles at a full-scale equestrian facility with four barns and three arenas, plus stalls, corrals and pastures that are home to more than 100 horses and other livestock.

We became a charity!

After 10 successful years as a privately funded project, Wrong Turn Ranch became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2024 to further increase our impact. Read our announcement here.
