FAQ

  • Who is this for?

Our priority is supporting non-profit leaders who shoulder the responsibility of providing critical, safety-net services in Los Angeles and surrounding communities.

Wrong Turn Ranch also serves professionals in other industries experiencing or at the risk of burnout. Programs may be customized for individuals who have experienced trauma, are disengaged with life, or who simply want to experience the magic of horses.

  • Do I have to ride a horse?

No. There is no horseback riding.

Because of the unpredictable nature of our equine partners, the WTR team will address any fears or anxiety before we begin equine-assisted activities to keep you and the horses safe. If you have any allergies or injuries that may affect your participation in the program, please let us know.

  • Why do we work with horses?

As prey animals, horses are highly sensitive to both verbal and non-verbal communication and are uniquely attuned to shifts in energy and intention. Select horses are partnered with human facilitators retained by the ranch to educate and support individuals and leadership teams. WTR also provides other animal-assisted experiential activities involving mini horses, sheep, goats, and alpacas. The smaller farm animals can be less intimidating than the larger horses, increasing accessibility to animal-assisted experiential learning for participants.

  • What do we do with horses?

You will be guided to partner with horses through a variety of activities, exploring trust, cooperation and communication as core aspects of leadership. The horses provide immediate feedback, which our facilitators will help you interpret, giving you opportunities in the moment to experiment with new ways to lead or follow. Research shows that animal-assisted interventions can improve mental health outcomes, including positive impacts on anxiety and stress.

  • What do I wear?

The weather in Somis is generally mild, though weather and temperature will change throughout the day. We recommend you dress in layers, wearing long pants, a jacket, and a hat. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required; we suggest sneakers or boots. You will get dirty.

  • Where is Somis?

Somis is a coastal-agricultural community in Ventura County. Neighboring cities are Moorpark and Camarillo. The ranch is about 10 minutes off the 23 North/118 West freeway at Los Angeles Avenue.
